Comica Boom X-D Wireless Microphone First Impressions
What’s included?
This Comica Boom X-D just might be the best value for money in terms of wireless microphone systems. This particular model, the D1 model, includes one transmitter (TX), one receiver (RX), a lavalier microphone, a wind muff, a dead cat for the built in mic on the transmitter, a USB-A to USB-C charging cable, and a 3.5mm TRS to TRRS cable for smartphones. This system also includes two 3.5 TRS to TRS cables that are attenuated cables for specific brands. One cable is for Canon and Nikon, and the other cable is Panasonic, Fujifilm and Sony cameras.
The microphone is packaged well and it comes in a small box, however unlike my other Comica mics, it does not include a carrying case. Not a deal breaker for me, but I do appreciate those cases as they help protect my equipment.
Features
Some of my favorite features of this system are:
It uses 2.4 GHz Frequency (not UHF)
Has internal mic
Mono/Stereo Out Modes available
Real Time Audio Monitoring
Compact and lightweight design
USB-C Port
Initial Impressions
After using this microphone system for a few of my YouTube videos, I think this system is really easy to use. Their compact size makes them really easy to handle and hide. This system comes ready to go straight out of the box, just turn it on and you’re ready to record. So if you are on a budget, I think this is a no brainer. Using this system will definitely improve your videos’ audio quality. The audio quality is solid, I wouldn’t say it’s as good as the Rode Wireless Go system, but it is right there with it. The Rode is slightly louder, but these work well and are good enough.
Value
It’s priced well at $185 USD for the D1 model, and you get plenty of nice features at this price point. What I like about this system that the Rode Wireless Go doesn’t have is the real time audio monitoring feature. Another plus for this system is that you can use two transmitters with one receiver. You can’t do that with the Rode Wireless Go. Even if you end up buying this model, the D1, that only brings one transmitter, you can order a second one if you like.
I reached out to Comica Support and asked them about getting a second transmitter; they told me that in mid August we will be able to purchase a single transmitter on Amazon for around $90 USD. So if you think you’re going to need two transmitters, then you’re better off ordering the Comica Boom X-D D2 model that includes two transmitters for $259.00 USD otherwise you’ll end up paying more.
A few other things that I like about the Boom X-D is the way the dead cat is attached to the built in mic. It will actually stay on! 1000% better than the Rode Wireless Go’s dead cats, which in my opinion are straight up trash (they fall off just by breathing on them).
Conclusion
In conclusion, I like the results this system has given me so far. The audio quality is good enough and like the Rode Wireless Go this too is a very versatile system that is a good option for run and gun shooting. I will post a video review soon where I’ll go more in depth on this system.
