As many of you already know and probably saw this past Sunday night we had a really cool night sky event. The sun, the Earth and the moon lined up in a row and we were able to observe a lunar eclipse, which coincided with a supermoon.  As a result of this eclipse we were able to see a beautiful reddish supermoon or a "blood moon" as some people call it.

I am not an astronomer nor an expert on this matter, but did a little research on this prior to going out and taking a few shots and found out that a "supermoon" actually occurs when a new or full moon is at its closest to the Earth, and it appears to be 7 to 8 percent larger in the sky.

This is the first time since 1982 that a lunar eclipse and a supermoon are combined (supermoon total lunar eclipse). It's a rare phenomenon that has only occurred five times in the past (1910,1928, 1946, 1964 and 1982). The next supermoon total lunar eclipse will take place in 2033. 

Here in the Tampa Bay area we were able to observe the eclipse and the supermoon.  Below are a few shots I took that night. Unfortunately, due to some light rain and clouds during the eclipse, I wasn't able to capture a good clean shot of the eclipse. Fortunately the skies cleared up when the moon turned red and I was able to get a few shots of the supermoon.
